Sober Strategies Playbook: Tips for Staying Sober

I thought everyone drank, and my tips to stay sober was to find a way to manage it more effectively. 12-Step meetings are great, but they aren’t a substitute for individual therapy. If you don’t meet with a therapist to work on the issues that were driving you to use, you will be much more likely to relapse. Yes, therapy can be costly, but it’s well worth it.

What are the 7 steps of sobriety?

Over the years, I have reflected on my sobriety and recovery. I would like to share with you the 7 steps I had to go through throughout my journey. The 7 steps are: 1) awareness, 2) surrender, 3) readiness, 4) receptivity, 5) acceptance, 6) perspective, and 7) action.

Staying sober throughout the year can be challenging, especially during holidays and other events involving alcohol. However, by following a few tips, it can be possible to maintain sobriety and continue to make progress in recovery. PAWS includes symptoms such as sleep troubles, irritability, depression, or intermittent anxiety.

Embrace change.

It can be difficult, but real friends will understand. If they oust you for not drinking, then you can be sure that they were not actual friends anyways.

This might look like joining a support group (even if you haven’t relapsed), continuing or restarting therapy or counseling, getting a personal trainer, nutritionist or even life coach. If you aren’t feeling ready to be around alcohol-infused parties or have already gone to a few and have recognized you’ve reached your limit, you can always host your own sober party. If you’re resistant to the idea because you don’t want to “burden” your loved one, turn the situation around. If they were in your shoes, would you want them to ask for your help? We're here 24/7 to help you get the care you need to live the life you want. Talk to our recovery specialists today and start treatment immediately.

With time, it will get easier, but especially when you're jumping back in, keep a strict schedule. Have some sober friends you can invite as your plus-one to a social event like a party or wedding. And stay in touch with your sponsor and call them if you’re feeling anxious or uncomfortable. Lean on close friends and family for support, even if your relationships aren’t what they used to be. Think about going to counseling or family therapy to help with that and to deal with other personal issues. More likely than not, family members and close friends will be supportive of your recovery.

Therefore detoxing and recovering presents you with the perfect launchpad from which to make worthwhile changes. For example, attending local 12-step meetings like NA or AA. Surrounding yourself with others undergoing the same broad experience can be powerfully motivating. From walking, jogging, and cycling to swimming, tennis, and yoga, find an activity you enjoy and stay active in your recovery. Alternatively, experiment with new ways of spending your free time. Imagination is your only limitation and you’ll soon be productively filling your time. Choosing recovery close to home means your support system is just a few miles away.
